Monetized radio station websites are an often overlooked source of income. What is monetization, as it pertains to websites?
Website monetization is the process of converting existing traffic being sent to a particular website into revenue. The most popular ways of monetizing a website are by implementing Pay per click (PPC) and Cost per impression (CPI/CPM) advertising.
The simpler definition is “Selling Adspace Online.” Almost every page you go to has some sort of advertising on it, and none of it came free. Whether it is PPC, or CPI/CPM, money flows into the station, and has a high potential to become residual income. Many streaming providers have the ability to do video pre-rolls on a streaming player, allowing radio stations to show video commercials on their sites.
There are some advertisers that actually feel more comfortable advertising online than they are on the radio, because they are more familiar with it, or they feel they have a better understanding of how it works. Having an online advertising ability gives stations to bundle with on-air spots for added value, and increased marketability. Giving ad space to companies also gives them the added benefit of linking from your site, to theirs, increasing online visibility. The bottom line, is that it puts more money in the stations pocket, with little to no overhead.
